Meet Art “Karts” Huseonica

Arthur “Karts” Kenneth Huseonica, 72

retired from working, but not from living.

Recent adventures include a summit of Mt Rainier with Nepalese guide, Tulsi Gurung; a solo record-setting double-traverse of Death Valley; oldest person to complete the Bear Grylls’ extreme survival course; a solo Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim of the Grand Canyon; a solo winter summit of Humphreys Peak in Arizona; a record-setting Amazon River expedition; appearing on a new adventure show BEAR GRYLLS: FACE THE WILD; a solo, record-setting, supported yo-yo thru-hike of the 800-mile Arizona Trail; and a crew member on the Amazon original series Eco-Challenge Fiji.

Born January 6, 1951 in Lucerne Mines, Pennsylvania, USA, Huseonica went to college part-time while working several jobs. At age 24, Huseonica joined the U. S. Navy as an Ocean Systems Technician working with the Integrated Undersea Surveillance System (IUSS) tracking submarines throughout the worlds’ oceans. He has been stationed in California, Iceland, Florida, Japan, Hawaii and sailed around the world collecting oceanographic data. He retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer from the Pentagon to become a Collegiate Associate Professor and Academic Director at University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC).

Huseonica holds several advanced degrees, including a doctorate in education. He has been quoted in National Geographic Magazine, Management Review Magazine, Newsweek, and featured recently in numerous print and online media, including an NBC News Baltimore feature TV news story about his adventures; an NBC news promotion about Arizona broadcast by KPNX in Phoenix, a CBS News Phoenix feature story about his record-setting hike on the Arizona Trail, and numerous magazine and newspaper articles about his adventures.

Huseonica is married to Karen Ann Carlsen, formerly of Brooklyn, New York, USA. They reside in Sun City, Arizona, USA where he was rated as a “Super Senior” and recently called a “River Monster” by PHOENIX magazine. Huseonica is an active member of the Sun City Hikers and the Sun City PRIDES. They have a son Patrick, and three grandchildren.
